Converting akai hardware sampler disks to images using omniflop
Posted on: Jan 13

With the supply of floppy disks decreasing and getting hard to find the demand for HXC floppy disk emulators has increased, As these devices allow us to replace our old floppy drives with somthing more futureproof.

With that being said, there is now also a need to convert your old floppy disks in a format that the hxc device can read.

in order to convert your old AKAI Hardware sampler floppy disks to digital format , you will need the following setup:

1. an old PC with a floppy disk drive

( I highly recomens using a Dell OptiPlex 745 DT.)

2. a program called Omniflop, installed correctly and old PC with a floppy drive.

3. Windows 7 installed 32bit on your PC

4. Omniflop software and Hxc floppy emulator software installed

Windows 7 32bit only:

I haven't had any luck with win7 64 bit , When I switched to 32bit, everything was more compatible with the retro gear,( scsi , mesa, drivers, aspi ect )

Using Translator to convert Akai sampler disks: Ie s3000xl,MPC,s950,s900 ect.

I can't really comment on translator as I found it a little buggy, as it seemed to freeze allot and so I ended my experiments as such and moved on.

Also ripping Akai floppy seems to be a dialed in process and your configuration using omniflop has to be spot on.

( according to the omniflop installation and spec spec ) you need an actual physical floppy drive installed in your pc ( not a USB drive ) and also make sure their floppy controller driver are installed.

My omniflop / hxc PC ) works like a beast ( I only use this for ripping floppies and converting floppy images to hfe. I am using an old dell pc  ( I found it mine discarded in the street )

For those who want to replicate , its a Dell OptiPlex 745 DT. I have formatted the hard drive and installed win 7 32bit, installed the omniflop controller driver, And it now rips Akai disks really well.
